SegmentStream vs Databricks

Databricks is a data and AI platform for engineers, with Lakebase, its serverless Postgres, Databricks Apps and Agent Bricks for agents. SegmentStream is for a company’s own working software: records, rules, apps, integrations and a company agent, with a warehouse and pipelines included, built by your coding agent or by our engineers.

  • Choose Databricks when

You have a data platform team, train or serve your own models, process large volumes, or want apps and agents built on data already in Databricks.

  • Choose SegmentStream when

Your company needs working systems, such as a CRM, finance and operations tools, and an agent over them, without first running a data platform.

  • Use both when

Databricks stays your data and machine-learning platform; SegmentStream runs the software your teams work in.

How they differ

What Databricks is built for, and what SegmentStream is built for

Databricks calls itself one database for AI, apps and agents: Lakebase, its serverless Postgres, for operational data, Databricks Apps for data and AI applications and Agent Bricks for agents, governed through Unity Catalog. It is built for the data scientists and engineers who run that platform.

SegmentStream starts from the business rather than the data platform. You declare the records your company has, the actions that change them and the roles allowed to take each one; the apps, the API, MCP tools and the company agent all go through them.

A warehouse and pipelines come with every workspace, so analytics sit next to the software that creates the data, and the platform runs them on a schedule with runs and lineage in the console.

Using both

SegmentStream and Databricks together

Databricks stays your data and machine-learning platform; SegmentStream runs the software teams work in day to day, with its own warehouse for the data that software creates.

Questions

Is SegmentStream a Databricks alternative?

For a company’s working software and its agent, often yes. For large-scale data engineering, machine learning or a company-wide data platform, Databricks is built for that.

Databricks also offers a database for apps and agents. How is SegmentStream different?

Lakebase gives you a Postgres database to build on. SegmentStream gives you the company’s records with their actions, roles and history already defined, plus sign-in, integrations, hosting and a company agent, so the rules agents follow are part of the platform.

Do we need a data team to run SegmentStream?

No. Pipelines are code in your repository; the platform runs them on a schedule and shows runs and lineage in the console.
